What a courthouse owes the person waiting

Most of the time anyone spends in a court building is spent waiting. We design for the hearing and leave the waiting to chance.

A hearing lasts minutes. The wait around it lasts hours, and it happens standing, in corridors sized for circulation rather than for people who have nowhere else to be.

Shade, seating, water and a clear line of sight to the door you are waiting on cost almost nothing at the planning stage and cannot be added later.

We now draw the waiting sequence before the courtroom plan. It changes the building.
